Art from The Edwards-Bishop Collection
Primarily, this collection presents jade objects as masterpieces of representational sculpture, both 3-D (in the round) and 2-D (pictorial bas relief), as well as vessels which incorporate both. And although a secondary category of jade symbols and adornment is included at the end, the collection’s goal is to illuminate nephrite jade as the most demanding and perpetual medium for great sculptural art far more than cultural artifact or ornament. When you’re working directly with stone it’s dramatically demanding – because there’s no way back. Every part that is taken away will never be part of it again.
As Michelangelo said: “..it’s about finding the image that is waiting within.”
