Pigeon Shape Vessel 13.2 cm

An elegant creation of a vessel with head and upper body of a pigeon as cover. The basic medium-green nephrite color is actually enhanced by the oxidized surface areas that give a contrasting mottled pattern to the underlying green. The sculpture of the posed with dignity head and the relief lines over the bill and beautifully curved over the prominent eyes; the plume of feathers delineated along the jaw on each side and the bifurcated crest plume are all done with consummate skill. And this skill continues its display with the three layers of feathers: primary, secondary and covert on the sides and top. This is, indeed, an exemplary example of animal art in jade.
